The Society of Greek Writers (GR: Εταιρία Ελλήνων Λογοτεχνών) was founded on May 19, 1934 with its headquarters in Athens and its members professional writers. Its purpose and position is "the production of intellectual and cultural work while at the same time fighting for the rights of the Greek writers of the place as a whole". The Society of Greek Writers is managed by a nine-member Management Committee which is responsible for the proper management of its affairs as well as for ensuring its smooth operation. Its first president was Grigorios Xenopoulos, from 1934 to 1937, followed by: Miltiadis Malakasis, Michael Argyropoulos, Angelos Sikelianos, Nikos Kazantzakis, as well as other great names of Modern Greek Literature.
